Buy Me a Coffee

Season 12, Episode 13

Kelly

Age: 27
Location: Harbor City, CA
Addiction: OxyContin and meth
What’s Memorable: The man who raped when she was a kid (her sister’s boyfriend) went to jail for raping someone else and is about to be released. Her need to escape is understandable. The way she talks about what happened is excruciating. She has so much pain and reasonable resentment. It seems from the followup like she had found some measure of peace in her sobriety. I hope that continues.

Legacy Update: Aired during Brad and Sam’s episode 6.5.18. She’s been sober 3 years and is doing well, as is her brother Kevin.

Official synopsis: Kelly, a 27-year-old mother of three, mixes pills and meth to forget the man behind bars who destroyed her childhood. Can Kelly’s family come together to help her face the painful past that consumes her?

Original Air Date: November 2012
Interventionist: Jeff

This episode was just heart breaking. I can absolutely understand why she would turn to drugs after going through that. I don’t know what else she really could have done other than suicide to deal with that kind of pain. Because she certainly was not presented with options for healing, and even if she was, it can take years to even get to the point where you’re ready to heal. Sometimes I think about how drugs can seem like the only option for people with trauma.

  2. Sheila

I can remember an episode where the moms boyfriend raped the daughter(addict) and the mom blamed her! Seth had said something along the lines of:..” id be surprised if she didn’t become an addict” thats what I think when I see this girl. And her son just breaks my heart, probably because at the time my son was the same age.

    1. Stephanie

I just watched that one last night. I had to pick my jaw up off the floor when the mom said she moved across the country to get her daughter to stop sleeping with her boyfriend.

  3. KimAnne

Kelly’s mom & I worked together back in the early 90’s. My daughter (who is close to Kelly’s age) & I would hang out with their family. We went to Disneyland, had bbqs, etc. We fell out of touch approx a yr or 2 prior to the incidents involving Kelly’s sister’s boyfriend. Kelly was such a happy girl/tom boy & LOVED sports. She had a glow around her, a beautiful energy. Her mom is a very decent & kind person who cares deeply for her children. I don’t live in CA anymore but I wish the best for them all & hope they are all continuing to heal.

  4. Brooke

Kimanne…. Donyou have kellys last name? I met her yesterday while i was in jail she was my bunkie for the night. She watched over me and protected me for being the newbie. I want to write her a letter that i promised her yeaterday. And send her a book

I commented below as Liv B and afterwords noticed it appears you’re on the westside of LA. My mom and I are in Santa Monica and I too am a recovering alcoholic albeit a young one (almost 22.) wondering if you had any recommendations for any particular meetings on the westside as I’ve been looking for one that suits me for a while and haven’t found the right one yet. If not just see my comment below and know we wish you well. Xx

The second website says the charges are burglary. So sad. Up until now, everyone that has commented about her on the Intervention Facebook page has said she was doing great. Hope everything turns out better for her.

  6. Nicole

Of all the episodes I’ve seen, Kelly’s is one of the ones I can relate to the most, along with Megan’s, (the episode Sheila is referring to )You can feel that she is in constant excruciating pain and turned to drugs to numb it away. I’ve watched it several times and it has the same powerful impact on me each time.

I really help Kelly is doing better! She is one I’d definitely want to meet in person.

    1. chris m

It was actually Ginas episode that sheila was refering to.

      1. Diane S

        No, it was Megan.

      2. Alice Schmid

        No it was Meghan.

    2. Alice Schmid

      completely agree

  7. Halley

Kelly may have had some bumps in the road, but I can see such a strength and determination in her. Seeing that indomitability in someone else who has dealt with an unbelievable amount inspires me to be strong.

  8. Melly

A happy update, went in Kelly’s FB page & her most recent post from 4/17 states “It feels so good to take my kids out to eat and tell them to order whatever they want and give them money. To play games and not stress…working hard has its benefits…”
How wonderful to see that she’s completely turned around & her life is apparently on an amazing track!!

  9. kevin

hey everyone this is Kevin Kellys brother, we are both doing great, kelly was put inew Jaina awhile after the intervention, I ended up relapsing as well and was homeless in florida for a year, but today kelly has 1 year sober I’m at 3 years sober, I’m married with an amazing son and just bought my first home, thank you all for your kind words and prayers.

    1. Nicole

Inew Jaina? I’m guessing they was a typo… Possibly for in jail? Where was Kelly put? I’m so happy to hear you guys are doing well! I really connected to Kelly’s story being a rape victim and heroin addict. The way she talked about it sounded exactly like how I felt. Kelly and Megan H. (The episode right before hers) are my two favorite of all of intervention episodes I’ve seen because they’re both so relatable to me and such strong women. I’m glad to hear you’re both doing so well. Tell Kelly she is beautiful and inspiring from me 🙂

    2. KimAnne

Hi Kevin! I’m so glad to hear you guys are doing better! It’s a tough road, I’m sure. Tell your mom I said hi. Keep the faith.

    3. Cellie

God bless you and Kelly. I only watched this show for the first time tonight. I am so concerned for you both. I pray you are both happy, healthy and enjoying life as you both deserve to do.

  10. kevin

lol yea I’m not sure how the heck inew Jaina came to be but yes it meant jail, and I sure will and thank you for your support.

  11. kevin

and she was in Lynnwood woman’s jail for awhile but she is doing well ill let her know you said hi.

    1. Nicole

      Kevin,

Thank you for writing back! Do you think Kelly would mind if I wrote her a letter while she is in jail? I know I am a stranger, so it may come across as weird but it would be cool to connect with someone who has gone through very similar things to what I’ve been through and am still going through. Unfortunately rape affects every aspect of your life, even worse than addiction does by far. Kelly is such a strong and beautiful person and it breaks my heart to see her in so much pain.

I recently saw a documentary on addiction that explained that when humans feel pain, our subconscious minds can’t differentiate whether it’s physical, mental, or emotional pain. It just feels pain, and measures that pain accordingly. This has reaffirmed my belief that people who have experienced trauma (like rape) and are in a great deal of pain generally self medicate with opiate based pain medication and heroin, preferably over or in addition to other substances to numb the pain away. Like someone who was been through physical trauma like a sports injury and put on a opiate pain management program, much like someone that has been through emotional trauma like being raped may use opiate pain medications (including heroin) to self treat their underlying condition – trauma. It is my theory and experience that most opiate/heroin addicts have been through some sort of trauma (and trauma comes in many forms, lots of which are not immediately recognizable) and are self medicating. Many opiate addicts, including myself, have PTSD – or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

For more info on PTSD, I’d highly recommend the book “The Body Keeps The Score” by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk. If I remember right, Kelly said she enjoyed reading and I can tell that she is very intelligent. Perhaps I could send her the book in jail? In the book Dr. van der Kolk explains that a child who has been through repeated abuse is 6,000 times more likely to become an IV drug abuser than someone who was not. Again, I strongly believe that trauma and drug abuse, particularly opiate abuse, go hand in hand.

On a side note, I’m moving to Manhattan Beach, CA from UT in about a month and I’m so excited! 🙂

  12. Joyelle Vollero

Kevin-congrats on your sobriety and a happy, healthy life. It’s great to know that you and Kelly are doing well. Very cool of you to comment on here and update all of us!

  13. Leslie Zaremba

Kelly, I am so happy in my heart that you found peace and love after such a horrible ordeal. I also was raped and “date raped” and I hate to say these words, but SHAME on yr sister and anyone who dares to say, ‘Get over it, already’! We heal, we move on, but it always there, for better or worse. Love to u for having the soul to do “better” – I envy that. I never used drugs, but my severe mental illness does not help my ability to manage that trauma. Please, live for us who cannot!

  14. Mayra Palacios

Hi Kelly and kevin, wow you guys have been such an inspiration to me! I am so happy both of you are doing well! I prayed for both of you since your sisters intervention aired. I live so close to you guys I live in Wilmington. I can’t say I know how Kelly felt about her trauma but you guys both inspired me to get clean! I hope both of you guys are doing well!

  15. Sara

After watching the episode I shed a couple tears seeing Kelly doing well and with her children!
Kevin glad to read your doing great too!
As a child of an alcoholic, I relate to children who have/have had parents with drug and alcohol addiction but I’m a mom and to see another mom fight to be a good mom is wonderful!
Best to you both and to your entire family!!!

  16. Kathleen Weill Lee

Watch Intervention all the time and just saw an episode,178 with Kelly, in 20I4. I so hope she is doing well.I will pray for her & her beautiful/handsome kids & family. For whatever reason my heart melted. She is a tough cookie that managed to get through so much pain.

  17. Liv B

Kevin! My mom and I just watched your intervention, I hadnt seen it before but she had, and we both commented early on about a great brother you seem to be. You two are lucky to have each other for as much as you were connected for years through your addiction, you can also be connected going forward in supporting each other’s recovery and sobriety and that is really cool. Wanted to say we both thought her son Joseph (with the glasses) was such a special and brave kid who seemed wise beyond his years. Sometimes that can be more of a curse than a blessing, but we’re hoping the best and wish him, your sister Kelly, and your whole family all the best as you move forward in your lives. X

  18. Kim

Yet another woman that hits a man and nobody cared. I usually love Jeff, but telling her to stop “putting hands” on her after she hit him and he was just trying to get her to not leave was bass ackward. I will never understand this double standard. Not fair!

    1. mc

well considering that she was not herself at all, in fact another person entirely, i can forgive her.

    2. LaRay

I’m not surprised she slapped him, she was repeatedly raped by a man when she was young. Unless she has given someone approval to touch her, she has every right to be on the offense.

  19. BobbyB

Her boyfriend in the episode is one of the few notable partner’s of an addict in this series who I think was doing the best they can absolutely

  20. Jen N

I hope she is doing well today, and the family is together in supporting her. but, quick question, how could she possibly afford 1400mg of Oxycontin a day? That has got to be a typo, even if she was selling and had multiple scrips.

  21. Alice Schmid

Dear God Kelly, what yoou have survived is absolutely humbling to me. You are a testament to human strength.

I know how hard life is and will always seem to you; your rapist has taken your serenity. But I pray for your strength and hope you come to a point of peace.

    I send you pure love.

    1. Cassie Guerrero

I mean son. They had her sister’s name in the article and it threw me off.

      1. Ami

I’m confused. The article says the Mom’s name is Kristen.

      2. Cassie Guerrero

Her sister Kristen had her kids for a long time. Could be that Kristen introduced herself to people as his mother?

      3. Higgs

I thought her sons name was Joseph?

  22. Diane S

Why on Earth did her mother let her 15 year old daughter’s 23 year old boyfriend move in with the family in the 1st place?

    1. Stefan

Right!? I would love to have seen the reaction on my parents’ faces if my sister ever asked if any of her boyfriends could move in. Come to think of it why was she even allowed to date a 23 year old???

  23. Susie

Anyone have an update on kelly and her brother? Her brother kevin posted here, but that was 5 years ago. Just wanted to see how they’re doing now?

  24. Olivia

Looks like Kelly is doing all right! YAY! https://www.instagram.com/turmankelly/ She looks beautiful and her kids seem very happy.

    2. KEVIN

Hey this is kevin im doing great married for 7 years 2 amazing kids and beautiful home suffer from bad anxiety these days after his murder and my sons seizures but been sober since dec 24 2013 after my 1st born ,you can reach me on facebook @ kevin turman , the picture is of my nephew who was murdered so you can make sure its the correct one by searching email [email protected] or my other pic is of me wearing a miami dolphins mask and beanie holding my son. i wish i could give good news on kelly but she has blocked out most family we dont speak very often and i pray it changes one day but she seems to be stuck in limbo and i live in AZ so im not there to say if she is using for sure but continue to pray for us we went through similar experiences as kids intervention left alot out , i was young and making money and made addiction look to fun they said so they cut alot of me out,at the time my sister was a mother and had so much more to lose. she was aware she was on intervention because she had seen the show i hadnt and thought i was the coolest thing since sliced bread, but ive humbled myself i have a great career and i try hard, i still struggle but fortunately i have more faith in being a great father and husband then being an addict . her boyfriend at the time robert was far from perfect and was in addiction as well something they also left out, her son joe just had a beautiful baby but still has issues coping with our up bringing. it was far worse then what intervention led to believe. to sum this up i couldnt be more blessed and greatful for that show, it saved my life and im in dept forever and i still deal with the carma of the things i did back then to this day but i made a promise to never hurt anyone again and so far ive done that. thanks for the love and support everyone and to those who question my mom i get it but the circumstances of not having a father around and a man who kills and rapes people she was not sure what to do but she regrets and wishes she had done better but she was physically and emotionally abused for years as well we all were. but were a family that wont give up and we are moving forward every day.

      1. Christopher

      5. Jimmie

Hey, Kevin, I know it’s been 2 years since you update this. But could it possibly be that your sister still has issues dealing with her sexual assault? And nobody in her family has once. Ever apologized to her for why it happen? Particularly your mother even though she didn’t know about it until years later
