Buy Me a Coffee

Season 22, Episode 9 (Intervention Canada)

Mike
Age: 29
Location: Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada
Addiction: Heroin

Official Synopsis: Twenty-nine-year-old Mike was a loving dad and partner who was determined to be the father that he never had. After a workplace accident his dream came crashing down as he developed an addiction to prescription painkillers. Eventually Mike’s family left him and he turned to heroin to numb the pain. When he and his current partner Collette met, both were sure they’d found their soulmate, that is until Collette discovered Mike was hiding a severe opiate addiction. Now, seven months pregnant, Collette fears that without an intervention Mike will die before he gets a second chance at fatherhood.

What’s Memorable: [Guest Post by Stefan] That footage of the homeless encampment seriously felt like something out of a horror movie. Mike otherwise seemed like a good guy who understood his situation but who happened to be in the clutches of addiction. It made the update at the end where he left treatment after just one day and tried to break into his fiancé’s apartment all the more shocking. Hopefully he will eventually get clean so he can be a part of his child’s life.

Interventionist: Andrew
Date Aired: May 3 2021  (Aired as Intervention Canada Season 5 Episode 7, on May 13, 2019)

I’m sorry but his fried Wyatt was hot as hell!!!

I felt so bad thinking the same during this episode, I mean sobriety looks well on him….

      1. Stefan

Indeed. He reminded me of a former colleague of mine..

  2. Amber

What a sad case. Those poor kids…he’s clearly running from his responsibilities of being a parent and isn’t mature enough to be a father.

  3. Holly Berry

Huge ups and downs with this episode.
The black screens at the end where it was like oh no he relapsed, but then yay he’s in recovery! And then…..how it all ended.
I feel for Collette and her newborn daughter.

    1. Diane

I felt the exact same way. To see at the end that he was back on the streets and she was raising the baby alone was heartbreaking

  4. Mariea

Does anyone have a update on Mike or Collette. She seemed so sweet.

    1. Stefan

I read on the FB page for Intervention Canada that nothing has changed sadly.

Can you please tell me, or someone else who knows, how do I look for updates on Mike and/or Collette? I would really love to see one day that Mike got sober.

  5. KK

I know addiction effects peoples choices and feelings, but I got the impression he didn’t have much interest in getting clean, even in that interview at the end when he was sober, I don’t know, it didn’t feel secure so when the next slide showed how it ended, I hate to say it but I wasn’t surprised. Very heartbreaking for his loved ones

  6. Violet

This episode was so unbelievably sad. Collette really deserves a stand-up husband and father, but I can’t help but question why she decided to continue with a pregnancy while Mike was in active addiction. And she knew when she met him that he was in a halfway house and only had 8 months clean. I wonder what she was looking for in him?

The fact that his children and pregnant wife weren’t enough to motivate him to do the HARD work and get clean, shows that he just didn’t really want to, like other posters have said.

    1. RB

I don’t understand why you feel she should have not kept her baby regardless how long he had been sober? Millions of people raise their children alone and no two people are the same. Someone people are she to stay in recovery on their first time getting clean and other people never can. It definitely makes things harder for her and the unborn child, but not impossible.

    2. Melly

this is the most ignorant comment I’ve read on this site. I’m pro choice, but get rid of the baby because the father can’t get his shit together? ever think she wanted this baby? you’re delusional my friend.

  7. Susie

Collette was so sweet and adorable, she really doesn’t deserve to raise her daughter with no help from Mike. Hopefully she has a good support system around her.
I really hope Mike can get and stay sober…those little girls need their dad!

  8. Deekota

I’m curious where Mike’s father may be from. It’s uncanny the similarities in stories to that of a man I am searching for (my brother).

oh well, this one… i feel so so so so bad for collette and his girls. it was hard for me to have simpathy for him, it seems like his addiction was a product of the no-consequences-for-me life he had always lived – but absolutely NO judgement to his mother, never. god knows how hard it might be to raise a child by yourself, struggling everyday to be able to give the minimum. wishing well for his family, collette and the girls.

  10. Susie

Anyone have a recent update on Mike? He seemed like a genuinely nice guy who just could not get out of addiction no matter how hard he tried. I really feel bad for him

  11. EFB

This episode was very emotional for me! In the year 2000 I was 22 and pregnant. My child father had dealt with addiction as had I but was cleaning up as I had depression and anxiety issues and wanted to build a life. But I still loved my partner and we were having a baby. When he was clean he was an amazing and loving person. He had obvious ADHD and trauma. He also had another older child that he had become estranged from due to his instability and drug use. After I found out I was pregnant I thought he’d clean up. But he continued to use and shoot up during my pregnancy. He would steal my money, he would disappear, he would take my car so I would have to call my parents or coworker for rides to work. I also had hyperemesis and obstetric Cholestasis. It was awful. The next few years were insane . I eventually left when my son was turning 4.
My son is 22 now. His dad is clean and living his best life. He has a great wife who my son works for. My son knows all his siblings and step siblings. I got an MBA, married, had two more kids.

  12. Kat

I just watched this one and I was blown away by how poorly Mike and Collette spoke to each other. I get that we have an addiction and pregnancy hormones in the mix, but still – for two people who “love” each other, they were very petulant and passive-aggressive towards each other. He talked about his two daughters and said he missed them, but everything he said about getting clean was so focused on Collette and his new baby that I started to feel like he was throwing away his old family in favor of this new one. And then of course, that ending, which really wasn’t all that surprising considering how immature he acted throughout (the baby shower part was so ridiculous that it felt scripted). He’s a lost cause and I feel sorry for all his loved ones, but especially his kids.

  13. Cris

What a coward and a loser Mike is and will be.
