Episode 84: Sandy

Season 5 Episode 12

sandy

Sandy
Age: 40’s
Location: Gloucester, Massachusetts
Addiction: Alcohol (vodka), pills
What’s memorable: Her husband, also an alcoholic, beat the shit out of her and then got sober 9 months ago. And Sandy loves him more than anything, just wants him back. Also, the completely vacant look Sandy always has on her face, and the lovely daughter that takes care of her – I just want to hug her.

Note: Sandy passed away after she left treatment.

Official Synopsis: By her late 20’s, Sandy had achieved the American Dream. She was married with four beautiful daughters and owned a home she and her husband built themselves. But today, Sandy’s life is unrecognizable from what it once was. Her days consist of combining prescription drugs with a pint of vodka, and relying on her daughters to monitor both her diabetes and drinking. Her speech is slurred, and she’s been hospitalized several times. Her family has only one option left–an intervention.

Episode 55: Josh

Season 4, Episode 6

Josh Season 4 episode 5

Josh
Age: 22
Location: Undetermined
Addiction: Food
What’s Memorable: How sad he is that he got so big, the incredibly messed-up family dynamic, especially dealing with his father. The followups and Josh’s subsequent youtube videos that shed more light on his situation. Here’s the latest video I could find.

Note: Josh is in the “Homosexuality as possible addiction trigger” category because he came out after the episode aired. I don’t know for sure that being in the closet was a part of his overeating, but it certainly makes sense.

Official synopsis: Next, a talented singer and the owner of his own karaoke business, 22-year-old Josh is addicted to food and weighs 550 lbs. Josh’s father, Rex, has the same weight problem–at 317 lbs., he’s a diabetic who’s had six strokes. Now, Rex watches helplessly as Josh follows in his footsteps toward an early death. Josh’s mother and two brothers hope that an intervention will be a wake-up call for the whole family to choose health.

Episode 47: Caylee

caylee

Caylee
Age: 21
Location: Salt Lake City, Utah
Addiction: Heroin & Cocaine (Speedballs), Bulimia
What’s Memorable: The skin-picking, how badly the drugs have affected her looks, her controlling anorexic mother, her 50-year old boyfriend.

Official synopsis: As a child Caylee was an over-achiever from an affluent family. But despite her myriad successes, her mother, Christy, was never satisfied with her. Christy, herself was sexually-abused as a girl, and has hidden her bulimia from her family for 35 years. When Caylee was in grade school, Christy began to teach her daughter to count her calories. In high school, Caylee became a bulimic and began drinking. Now, she is 23 and a bulimic and a heroin addict. She is 80 lbs, and goes to her 50 year-old “boyfriend” for drugs and money. The family wants to help both mother and daughter. If they can find a way to have the mother present for Caylee’s intervention, they can then approach Christy about her bulimia as well.
Original Air Date: August 2007

Episode 45: Leslie

leslie

Leslie
Age: Late 30’s?
Location: Tulsa, Oklahoma
Addiction: Alcohol (vodka, mouthwash)
What’s Memorable: Ugh. This one is painful to watch. Leslie is completely obsessed with alcohol in a way I’ve never seen before. It almost seems at times that she’s acting like she thinks a bottomed-out alcoholic would act, but I just can’t imagine that anyone would treat their family the way she does as a performance, and not as a result of her terrible addiction. Also, the mouthwash. What the hell.

Official synopsis: Leslie is a Sunday school teacher, PTA member, soccer mom of three and a raging alcoholic. When she can’t get her hands on vodka or wine, Leslie resorts to economy size bottles of mouthwash. After countless arrests and DUI’s, her husband is hoping to find help for the mother of his children before it’s too late. It’s time for Leslie to choose: her alcohol or her family.

Episode 137: Benny

benny

Benny
Age:  38
Location: Bridgeport, Ohio
Addicted to: Opiates, Alcohol, Pain Meds
What’s Memorable: Benny really believes he deserves to be crazy rich, and seems confused about why he’s not yet. He thinks it’s just going to magically happen someday, and all his problems will be solved. Also, how horrible he is to his mother, the intervention.

Official synopsis:  An ambitious inventor and entrepreneur, Benny once dreamed of becoming a millionaire. But stress, drugs, and alcohol have turned his dream into a nightmare. Worst of all, he is no longer a dependable father to his six-year-old daughter. Benny, now 38 and living with his mother, has seen his relationship with his family reach the breaking point, and only an intervention can save him now.

Episode 130: Jimmy

jimmy season 9 ep 5 130n

Jimmy
Age:  28
Location: LaSalle, Illinois
Addicted to: Methadone
What’s Memorable: How sick Jimmy’s addiction has made his mother Joanie. She’s way more of a mess than he is, and probably the most enabling and co-dependent parent I’ve seen on this show.

Official synopsis:  Raised by an absentee alcoholic father, Jimmy joined a gang at 13 and was soon addicted to heroin. The birth of Jimmy’s son prompted him to try to get clean, but when things got tough with his new family, he began using again. Now Jimmy shares a dangerous methadone addiction with his ailing mother that threatens to kill them both.
Original Air Date: January 2011

Episode 39: Trent

trent

Trent
Age: 33
Location: Denver, Colorado
Addiction: Heroin
What’s Memorable: This is a sad one. Trent is a decent guy who just can’t stop, even though he’s lost everything and everyone. This is one of those episodes that powerfully hits home how the need to get high and the belief that it’s impossible to stop can completely take over a person’s life.

Official synopsis: Trent, 33, is a four-star chef who’s served U.S. presidents and Hollywood stars. But as the child of alcoholics, Trent’s formative years were marked with violence and abuse. He ultimately turned to drugs to cope, and today he is homeless, sick, battling freezing temperatures, and has an insatiable heroin addiction. His friends and family fear he won’t make it through the winter on the streets, but will Trent be willing to listen to the family he feels deserted him?
Original Air Date: April 2007

Episode 36: Jacob

jacob2

Jacob
Age: 24
Location: Sacramento, California
Addiction: Alcohol
What’s Memorable: Jacob is a sad angry mess, but he’s so incredibly smart and self-aware and open about how he feels and where he’s at in his life, it’s very easy to like him. You root for him to get his shit together because you can tell he’d be an awesome and happy sober person. The followup is pure joy. I found myself wishing I could track him down and try to be his friend. If you’re reading this Jacob, email me. Let’s hang.

Official synopsis: By day, Jacob, 25, is a banker. But most nights, Jacob is drinking, driving and often engaged in barroom brawls. He recently overdosed on alcohol and prescription drugs. His heart stopped and he had to be revived with paddles. Jacob blames his mother — a drug user and former dealer — for his addiction. But will he be able to hear her when she pleads for him to get help?
Original Air Date: March 2007

Episode 35: Ryan

Ryan Season 3 episode 3

Ryan
Age: 23
Location: Southern California
Addiction: OxyContin
What’s Memorable: I learned more about OxyContin in this one episode than I have anywhere else. Ryan is one of the more unpleasant and apathetic addicts profiled on this show, he’s really very unlikeable here, but I blame the Oxy. Severe apathy is a side effect of long-term use. Also memorable: the shooting up with friends in the house with the kids, the alcoholic stepfather.

Official synopsis: From the outside, Ryan and his family look picture perfect. They live in a beautiful house in an upscale northern California neighborhood. But inside, their world is falling apart. Ryan, once a talented drummer who was awarded a music scholarship to the state university, is addicted to opiates. He injects OxyContin up to 15 times a day. His moods swing wildly from needy to hostile, and his family no longer knows how to deal with him or help him. Their only hope is an intervention.
Original Air Date: March 2007

Episode 98: Gloria

Season 6 Episode 13

Gloria
Age: 53
Location: Bay Area, California
Addiction: Alcohol
What’s Memorable: Given the number of years Gloria has been an alcoholic, and her denial of having a problem, it was absolutely shocking that she agreed to treatment and then actually got sober. Probably the most surprising “yes, I’ll go” that I’ve seen.

Official synopsis: At 53, Gloria prides herself on being a good cook and an independent, fun-loving woman. But Gloria uses her cooking and charm to manipulate her family into letting her drink as much as she wants. Gloria had difficulty raising her children, and was married to an abusive man. At 42, Gloria got breast cancer and underwent chemotherapy and radiation but did not stop drinking. Now Gloria drinks and drives, misses work, and spends all her money on alcohol. Gloria’s family has had enough of her selfishness, and they’re ready for an intervention.

Episode 142: Latisha

latisha

Latisha
Age: 39
Location: Kalamzaoo, Michigan
Addiction: Crack
What’s memorable: Latisha appears to really like herself and her life, fancying herself popular and well liked, but the image she has of herself is a bit different from how people actually see her, as her daughter says. 20 hours a day smoking crack at her kitchen table, she can’t be too popular. Her kids at the intervention were heartbreaking. So glad she went to treatment.

Update: As of March 2016, Latisha is clean and doing great, she’s even a sober life coach and works at a treatment center. Awesome.

Official synopsis:  A mother of three, Latisha will go to any lengths to feed her crack addiction, including prostitution. Having been abandoned by her own parents because of their addictions, she’s happy with her life and just wants her family to get off her back, but the needs of her young daughter Tuesday are going unmet. There’s only one way to save Latisha from her herself–an intervention.

Episode 151: Jeanna

jeanna

Jeanna
Age: 24
Location: Madras, Oregon
Addiction: Meth
What’s memorable: The brutal event that triggered the addiction and the way she’s responded to the trauma. Just awful all the way around. By far one of the most tragic episodes of this show.

Official synopsis:  Jeanna conquered generations of addiction until the murder of her four-year-old son sent her spiraling into a $100-a-day meth addiction. An intervention is the only way to help Jeanna start to heal her troubled soul.
Original Air Date: September 2011

Episode 23: Chuckie

chuckie

Chuckie
Age: 29
Location: Los Angles, California
Addiction: Heroin
What’s memorable: There’s a lot that’s memorable about Chuckie. He was born addicted to heroin, his parents were junkies and lived the literal rock star lifestyle. Now he’s the stereotypical junkie – he shoots up 20 times a day goes to skid row to get his dope. Despite all this, he remains likeable and you’re really rooting for him.

Official synopsis:  Chuckie, 28, is the son of a famous musician, and was born into the rock ‘n’ roll world of the 70’s. Surrounded by famous musicians and privilege all his life, he aspired to be an athlete or singer. However, drugs have over-shadowed every moment of Chuckie’s life. Born addicted to heroin, this third generation addict lives on the streets, and is the last remaining member of his family not to get clean. Chuckie’s loved ones hope an intervention will help him break free of his family disease.

Episode 21: Antwahn

Season 2, Episode 8Antwahn Season 2 episode 3

Antwahn
Age: 39
Location: Los Angeles, California
Addiction: Crack
What’s memorable: Man, Antwahn has just about every possible addiction trigger out there. He had a really rough life. Also he seems like a super decent guy (other than doing things like stealing his daughter’s birthday presents to buy crack with) and you really root for him to get his shit together.

Official synopsis: Antwahn played professional basketball for the Los Angeles Clippers and in Europe for over a decade, but when a serious knee injury ended his career he began to binge on crack-cocaine and ended up on skid row.
Original Air Date: March 2006

Episode 14: Corrine

Season 2, Episode 1

corrinne2

Corrine
Age: 19
Location: Missouri
Addicted to: Heroin
What’s Memorable: The scenes of her shooting up with her boyfriend for many, many hours at a time really stuck with me. Also, her lovely, heartbroken grandmother.

Official synopsis:  Corinne is a pretty 18 year-old blonde girl who was an honor roll student, star athlete and played the clarinet and saxophone. She started using drugs at 14 after being sexually abused by a neighborhood boy who babysat her. Still striving to move forward while battling her addictions, she completed her GED and began college, finishing two semesters before dropping out. Now, Corinne has become addicted to a deadly combination of heroin and crystal meth. Corinne likes the “speedball effect” — the dangerous result of overlapping meth and heroin usage. Corinne is also a diabetic who requires insulin, but she often skips her doses because she is so high. After repeated trips to the emergency room, her family is expecting, any minute, to hear that they’ve lost her for good.

During high school, she sought solace with her boyfriend, moved out and started a family at 19. Andrea soon became overwhelmed with parenting duties and turned to alcohol.
