Raised by alcoholic parents, Donna was exposed to violence and abuse at an early age, and later drank so heavily that she lost custody of her two children. Episode 85: Sharon

Season 5 Episode 16

sharon

Sharon
Age: 51
Location: Texas
Addiction: Self-injury (hits herself), plastic surgery, shopping

What’s memorable: Sharon hits herself with her hairbrush in the head, in the stomach. She tried to kill her dog in the toilet, and she still spends everyday with her grandchildren. No one has any idea what’s going on her her head. It’s hard for anyone watching to know what’s going on in her head. Episode 78: Brittany

Season 5 Episode 5

Brittany
Age: 20’s
Location: Birmingham, Alabama
Addiction: Dilaudid
What’s Memorable: Oh this poor messed-up girl, living her whole life under the shadow of her older sister, to the point that her mother thought she may be the reincarnation of her. She was also molested as a kid and gang raped as a teenager – it’s not a mystery why she needs to numb out. I just hope she was able to find her way out and figure out who she is.

Official synopsis: Brittany was born five years after the brutal rape and murder of her 9-year-old sister, Terry. Brittany struggled with the pressure to live up to her mother’s perfect image of Terry. At 12, Brittany was molested, and she began taking drugs and sneaking out at night–anything to get out from under Terry’s shadow. Now she shoots up Dilaudid six times a day, begs family members for money and prostitutes herself. Brittany’s mother scrambles to give Brittany enough money for her fix. Desperate and on the verge of bankruptcy, Brittany’s family prepares for an intervention.

Episode 74: Nicole

Season 5 Episode 4

nicole

Nicole
Age: 32
Location: Baltimore, Maryland
Addiction: Dyspahsia- not swallowing, also pain pills

What’s Memorable: She hasn’t swallowed food or liquid in 14 years! I mean seriously. Not even saliva. That’s disturbing enough, but her inability to swallow is a traumatized response to being forced to perform oral sex on her friend’s father when she was a child. The man who did it admitted to it, got probation, and still lives in her neighborhood, triggering her over and over every freaking day. Her parents did nothing when it happened and now everyone just tells her she should get over it and move on, that she’s just looking for attention. No one in her life seems to have any sense of sympathy for her, they just think she’s disgusting. I mean she clearly needs help, she’s very unhealthy and she’s been resistant to getting that help, but I do believe that if her family could get a grip on WHY she is the way she is, and that she needs their support and not their judgment, she would be more willing to get better.

Official synopsis: After being molested as a child, Nicole developed an unusual eating disorder–she was unable to swallow. By age 16, she weighed just 68 pounds, and doctors inserted a feeding tube into her stomach. The tube was supposed to be temporary, but 16 years later, Nicole still relies on the tube and can’t swallow any food or liquids. She also abuses prescription drugs and neglects her two daughters. Her husband plans to divorce her if she continues to neglect their children.

Episode 62: Charles

Season 4, Episode 15

Charles
Age: 23
Location: California
Addiction: Heroin
What’s Memorable: “I’ll probably die on the streets, and I hope it’s sooner rather than later.” The scene of him shooting up in the fast food restaurant bathroom is disturbing. What a life. The followup is amazing.

Update: Sadly, Charles died of an overdose on March 10, 2014.  My heart goes out to his loved ones and everyone who was touched by his story.

Official synopsis: A talented motocross rider, Charles, 23, is still dealing with terrible childhood memories. When he was seven, his father went to jail for molesting him and his younger brother, and his mother became an alcoholic. Today, he uses heroin and alcohol to blot out his memories, but he’s pushed most of his family away. Now, his half-sister, Lindsey, is reuniting the family in one last attempt to help Charles with an intervention.

Episode 68: Allison

Season 4, Episode 19

Allison
Age: Mid-20’s
Location: Looks like New England, maybe Massachusettes?
Addiction: Inhalants (computer duster)
What’s Memorable: This one comes in 2nd as the most famous episode (after Cristy (Season 2), mostly due to the “I’m walkin on sunshine!” soundbite. 10 cans of duster a day is completely insane and she’s just out of it. I think what’s most shocking about this episode is that she survived this addiction.

Update: Allison continues to do really well in recovery. You can follow her on Twitter here. She’s an inspiration.

Official synopsis: She was a pre-med student on her way to becoming a surgeon, but the trauma of being molested as a child and her parents’ brutal divorce haunted Allison. She started to inhale computer dust remover, which is potentially fatal with each breath. Her erratic behavior and absence from classes got Allison dropped from the pre-med program. Allison is currently inhaling up to ten cans of dust remover a day. Can interventionist Jeff help Allison and her family?

Episode 45: Leslie

leslie

Leslie
Age: Late 30’s?
Location: Tulsa, Oklahoma
Addiction: Alcohol (vodka, mouthwash)
What’s Memorable: Ugh. This one is painful to watch. Leslie is completely obsessed with alcohol in a way I’ve never seen before. It almost seems at times that she’s acting like she thinks a bottomed-out alcoholic would act, but I just can’t imagine that anyone would treat their family the way she does as a performance, and not as a result of her terrible addiction. Also, the mouthwash. What the hell.

Official synopsis: Leslie is a Sunday school teacher, PTA member, soccer mom of three and a raging alcoholic. When she can’t get her hands on vodka or wine, Leslie resorts to economy size bottles of mouthwash. After countless arrests and DUI’s, her husband is hoping to find help for the mother of his children before it’s too late. It’s time for Leslie to choose: her alcohol or her family.

Episode 123: Amber

amber2

Amber
Age: 20’s

Addiction: Bulimia, Alcohol
What’s Memorable: Trophy wife syndrome: She got the life she always thought she wanted, but wasn’t never happy with it. Also, her family that signed a contract saying they would go to family treatment if she agreed to get help, and never went.

Official synopsis: When Amber was molested as a young child, she bottled up her emotions. She began binge eating, and became bulimic because she wanted to be popular and beautiful like her older sister. After high school, Amber had a baby and married, and managed to look like she was living an idyllic family life. But she was actually depressed, drinking heavily, and purging regularly. Her family hopes an intervention can help her confront her problems.

Episode 122: Miriam

Miriam Season 8 episode 122

Miriam
Age: 38
Location: Fresno, California
Addiction: PCP
What’s Memorable: Miriam’s story and personality are memorable on their own, but just the fact that she’s been doing PCP for 25 years is what’s amazing. I didn’t even know PCP was still out there, much less that someone could do it for that long.

Official synopsis: A charismatic reverend at a wedding chapel, Miriam, 38, is adored by her clients, but suffers inner torment. Sexually abused as a child by someone she trusted, Miriam turned to drugs at a young age, and now she’s addicted to P.C.P. Her family has practically given up on her, and she risks losing her daughter’s love. Can Miriam’s desperate family convince her to get on the plane to treatment?

tiffany

Tiffany D.
Age: 25
Location: Escalon, California
Addiction: Meth
What’s memorable: Girl’s a serious tweaker. I know skin pickers in real life but I’ve never seen an addict pick their face on this show. It’s so jarring to watch. Also memorable: Her grandparents’ denial and the surprising follow-up.

Official synopsis:  Tiffany, a former athlete and cheerleader who dreamed of a career in the medical field, has no intention of giving up her IV crystal meth addiction, despite the fact that her four-year-old son is being cared for by her family
Original Air Date: August 2011

Episode 140: Brittany

brittany

Brittany
Age: 19
Location: Southeast Michigan
Addiction: Heroin
What’s memorable: The strange “unsubstantiated claims” of sexual abuse disclaimer that I’ve never seen on this show before. Has this weird effect of making you think she’s lying, when really it’s just about legalities. Also memorable: the seemingly decent co-dependent boyfriend that inexplicably puts up with a whole lotta crazy shit.

Official synopsis:  Brittany once dreamed of becoming a police officer to protect people from the traumas that she faced as a child. But at 22, her goal is slipping away. corrinne2

Official synopsis:  Cristine is a wife and mother who drinks at least 18 beers a day.

Note: Talk about a weak official synopsis!  This is really one of the most unforgettable portrayals of alcohol addiction I’ve seen, on this show or any where else.  This is the first alcoholism episode of Intervention I saw, and it was this that really got me hooked on the show.

Episode 12: Michael M. & Randi

I’ve found references to this episode, but it is not listed on the Intervention Episode Guide and is not available on Netflix.  And as far as I know, it has not been re-run since it originally aired in July of 2005.  If anyone knows where I can find it, please let me know.
