dionico

Dionicio

What’s memorable: What a great dad he is, other than the whole heroin addict thing. “I love my family to death, it just seems that heroin comes first, above all.” He shoots up before seeing his little boys because he’d rather be high around them than not see them at all. I don’t think he knows that his boys know exactly what’s going on. Ugh. Sad.

Episode 67: Derek

Season 5, Episode 1

Derek

Derek
Age: 35
Location: Ontario, Canada
Addiction: Alcohol

What’s memorable: Memorable to me as the only episode of Intervention that I turned off halfway through out of sheer annoyance and still can’t watch the whole thing. I don’t actually even know what happened to Derek in the end. Did he go to treatment? No idea. Why? Because Derek is portrayed here as one of the most insecure, selfish, inconsiderate, shallow people I’ve ever seen in my life. Maybe he’s not that bad in real life, I don’t know.

Update: Derek Muzyka was killed in a car accident on December 30, 2016.  Obituary

Official Synopsis: He was once a championship bodybuilder and successful property owner. But when he turned 30, Derek felt he was over the hill and became severely depressed. Season 3, Episode 11

coley-meth

Coley
Age: mid 30’s?
Location: Northern California or Southern Oregon coast, near Arcata and Humboldt County
Addiction: Meth

What’s memorable: This one hits close to home more than any other. I come from a poor Pacific Northwest logging town, raised and surrounded by loggers and mill workers who snorted crank like other people drink coffee. Coley, his lifestyle, the way he uses, is intimately familiar to me in a way that actually makes me uncomfortable to watch. ANYWAY, since this isn’t about ME…Coley and Francine’s story is powerful. Their love is so strong, and they’re such good people. What else is memorable – Coley so focused on finding the burl, risking his life for it. Doing lines in the garage. (Again, a personal connection to that). The amazing and inspiring follow up.

Official Synopsis: As a timber cutter, Coley has one of the most dangerous jobs in America. But instead of taking serious precautions, he increases his risks every day by snorting crystal meth. Because of his addiction, Coley’s business is falling apart. His wife can barely stand to talk to him any more and his relationship with his three young children is deteriorating. They all believe his only hope is rehab, but will he be willing to go before it’s too late?

Epsiode 113: Rocky

Season 7, Episode 13

rocky

Rocky
Age: 50

What’s memorable: Well, the cry. It may be a “funny” meme, but there’s a whole lotta pain and suffering in that cry, and maybe some relief. And the son who declares that he hates his dad, but during the intervention he cries as he reveals how he really feels. It’s very powerful stuff, all of it.

Episode 109: Marquel

Season 7, Episode 10

Marquel
Age: 30
Location: South Beach, Florida
Addiction: Alcohol, bulimia, exercise
What’s memorable: This episode makes the “unforgettable episodes” category on account of 1) the intervention that didn’t happen as a result of her roommate figuring out it was the Intervention cameras, and telling her about it and 2) Marquel’s serious denial about her various addictions.

Official Synopsis: Working as a fitness instructor at the most elite gyms and partying on the club circuit at night, Marquel seems to have the perfect life. But her family sees her exercise regime as obsessive-compulsive, and they watch her binge-drinking episodes end up in hospitalizations. What’s memorable: How he gets money for crack by stealing and selling auto parts, his poor put-upon enabling mother, his dog Max as primary companion in the place of the family he wants so badly. It’s a very sad story. He’s so lonely, so desperate, so addicted, and completely aware of all of that and truly hates himself for it.

Episode 104: Amy W

Season 7 Episode 5

Amy W
Age: 27
Location: New Mexico
Addiction: Alcohol (vodka), anorexia, self-injury (cutting)
What’s memorable: How depressed she is, suicidal to the point of people being tired of hearing her threaten to kill herself. She’s clearly reaching out for help and attention though, and has been for many many years, but her family consistently has ignored and dismissed her. “You shouldn’t have to work so hard to convince your parents that you need help.” Indeed. Oh, and also, her sister telling her SHE SHOULDN’T HAVE GOTTEN HERSELF RAPED. “I warned her not to put herself in those situations.” That’s a seriously messed up thing to say. Come on girl.

Episode 90: Donald

Season 6 Episode 4

Donald
Age: late 30’s?
Location: Mastic, Long Island, New York
Addiction: Crack, alcohol
What’s memorable: Did you know that the mix of crack and alcohol results in more deaths than any other 2-drug combination? I didn’t know that before this episode. It’s surprising actually. I woulda thought maybe heroin and xanax, or pain meds and alcohol. ANYWAY, Donald seems like a thoroughly decent and caring guy who just can’t stay away from crack when life becomes just too hard for him to deal with (and things have certainly been hard, no doubt about it). He has a lot to lose and a lot to look forward to, I hope he was able to stay sober.

Official Synopsis: When he was five, Donald’s parents divorced. He longed for a strong father figure, but his father had very little contact with him. Donald became a gifted boxer, but ultimately chose drugs over his career. He joined a violent gang and turned to stealing to support his crack habit. Now his son is angry because Donald wasn’t there for him growing up. Donald’s girlfriend just had a baby and Donald has a second chance to be a good father, but his crack use is spiraling out of control.

Episode 80: Angelina

Season 5 Episode 11

angelina

Angelina
Age: 25
Location: New Jersey
Addiction: Heroin, Xanax
What’s memorable:  The fact that she signed a DNR so that the next time she overdosed they wound’t save her. Her seemingly paranoid accusations against her mother than turned out to be pretty much true. The way her “recovering addict” mother sits with her when she’s high and makes her talk so that she knows she’s not dying of an overdose. How much guilt her mother feels. The amazing post-treatment transformation. She looks SO MUCH BETTER. It’s funny, you don’t even know how terrible these addicts look until you see them sober.

Official Synopsis: When Angelina was eight, her family grew apart over an argument about money. Her mother turned to prescription drugs and cocaine to deal with the stress. After graduating from high school, Angelina became her younger brother’s legal guardian, but she was overwhelmed by the job of taking care of her brother and addict mother. It almost seems at times that she’s acting like she thinks a bottomed-out alcoholic would act, but I just can’t imagine that anyone would treat their family the way she does as a performance, and not as a result of her terrible addiction.
