Episode 144: Sarah & Mikeal

mikheal

sarah

Sarah & Mikeal
Age: 18 and 20
Location: Centerburg, Ohio
Addiction: Heroin
What’s memorable: The nasty bathroom they shoot up in and how sick they seem when they’re doing it, how addicted they are to each other, the moms trying to so hard to save their kids, how completely messed up Mikeal looks and acts in his interviews compared to what he looks like after treatment. He’s like the guy you see on the street that you know on first glance is a junkie, but then all the sudden he’s attractive and healthy looking. Such a transformation.

Official Synopsis: Like Romeo and Juliet on heroin, Mikeal and Sarah are a poor boy and a rich girl who have found sanctuary in each other’s pain. Sarah’s family feels that Mikeal has corrupted their daughter, taking Sarah from a casual pill abuser to a full-blown heroin addict. Original Air Date: June 2011

Episode 143: Shantel

shantel

Shantel
Age: 18
Location: Dunnville, Ontario
Addiction: Oxycontin
What’s memorable: I wonder how many kids with ADHD and get put on Ritalin end up being drug addicts.  There’s been a couple of them on this show. I’ll bet it happens a lot as a way to calm their brains. Anyway, Shantel. So young, so on the wrong path. Too bad the intervention didn’t take, she had potential.

Official Synopsis: Shantel uses OxyContin to cope with learning and mood disorders and to find friends in the drug culture. An overprotective mother provides her with money, and now Shantel, who faces potential jail time for a robbery, spends her days feeding her addiction in a motel.

Episode 143: Luke

luke

Luke
Age: 23
Location: San Francisco, California
Addiction: Crack
What’s memorable: Living on the streets with his mother who is willingly homeless just so she can keep an eye on her son. That’s some crazy co-dependency there. The craziness that he spouts when he’s high is disturbing.  The intervention and followup is a tear jerker, very affecting. I hope this family is well now.

Official Synopsis: Luke, 23, dreams of a career in photojournalism, but his daily cocktail of drugs has derailed his college plans and left both him and his mother struggling to survive on the streets of San Francisco.

Original Air Date: August 2011

Episode 147: Michelle

michelle

Michelle
Age: 30
Location: Williamstown, New Jersey
Addiction: Methadone, Xanax
What’s memorable: Unfortunately what I will remember most about Michelle is her ill-advised style and makeup choices. She’s really pretty underneath all that costume. Anyway, the way her young daughter and grandfather treat her is pretty horrifying, and while deserved to a certain extent it’s still hard to watch and seems like a bad way to behave. And the weird relationship with the 75 year old boyfriend, yikes. I really like Michelle, I hope she got her shit together and her family is nicer to her.

Official Synopsis: Michelle, 30, looks like an aging mother of two who takes a daily concoction of methadone, Xanax, and blood pressure pills to keep her identity as an edgy party girl alive, while her family begs her to wake up to the harm that her addiction has caused them. Now the family has had enough, and they’re finally ready to confront Michelle at an intervention.

Original Air Date: August 2011

Episode 146: Penny Lee

pennyless

Penny Lee
Age: 48
Location: Waipahu, Hawaii
Addiction: Alcohol (beer)
What’s memorable: The crazytown drunken rants, how she quit her long-term job because she wanted to drink, how guilty her son feels about going to live with their dad, how she’s forced to babysit her grandson and has to beg to get paid for it because her daughter knows she’d buy beer with it. “If they feel they can’t trust me with money, then why trust me with my grandson?” Penny Lee does make sense sometimes. The intervention is a powerful one.

“We’re gonna do our very best to heal your whole family. You don’t ever have to live this way again” – Candy

“Thank you.” – Penny Lee

Official Synopsis: Living in a small Hawaiian village, Penny-Lee has an infectious laugh and loves to have fun. But despite having a good family life and four children to be proud of, she’s an out-of-control alcoholic who spends most of her time alone, screaming and crying out to no one as she downs beer after beer. An intervention is her family’s last hope for their beloved family matriarch.

Interventionist: Candy

Episode 145: Larry

larry

Larry
Age: 32
Location: East Orange, New Jersey
Addiction: Alcohol (Brandy)
What’s memorable: The fact that he beats his wife when he’s drunk, and she’s so in love with him and won’t ever leave him.  And that failed intervention was a doozy. Too bad everyone couldn’t have gotten on board.

Official Synopsis:
Growing up with parents who demanded hard work, Larry rebelled with a life of crime. Today, he drinks a fifth of brandy a day even though he’s a spiritual man whose religion prohibits alcohol. Can an intervention save Larry from being ostracized by his spiritual community?
Original Air Date: July 2011

Episode 145: Megan

Megan

Megan
Age: 27
Location: Chapel Hill, North Carolina
Addiction: Cocaine, opiates (oxy, heroin, xanax)
What’s memorable: All the degrees she has, how smart she is. How her mom stayed with the husband who was abusive toward Megan, then left him as soon as he started being abusive to her instead. Shameful. And Megan really holds on to that resentment. Also the first trip to a new john, not knowing if she would come out alive. That was frightening. But an AWESOME followup. She looked so much better!

Note: Megan died in February of 2014 of a heroin overdose.  News story  Obituary

Official Synopsis:
Megan is struggling with her own demons. Her mother divorced and remarried, but Megan never felt included in her new family. She became an addict and even turned to prostitution to pay for her drugs. Can Megan still realize the dreams she once had of becoming a lawyer or professor?
Original Air Date: July 2011

Episode 142: Latisha

latisha

Latisha
Age: 39
Location: Kalamzaoo, Michigan
Addiction: Crack
What’s memorable: Latisha appears to really like herself and her life, fancying herself popular and well liked, but the image she has of herself is a bit different from how people actually see her, as her daughter says. 20 hours a day smoking crack at her kitchen table, she can’t be too popular. Her kids at the intervention were heartbreaking. So glad she went to treatment.

Update: As of March 2016, Latisha is clean and doing great, she’s even a sober life coach and works at a treatment center. Awesome.

Official synopsis:  A mother of three, Latisha will go to any lengths to feed her crack addiction, including prostitution. Having been abandoned by her own parents because of their addictions, she’s happy with her life and just wants her family to get off her back, but the needs of her young daughter Tuesday are going unmet. There’s only one way to save Latisha from her herself–an intervention.

Episode 148: Tiffany D.

tiffany

Tiffany D.
Age: 25
Location: Escalon, California
Addiction: Meth
What’s memorable: Girl’s a serious tweaker. I know skin pickers in real life but I’ve never seen an addict pick their face on this show. It’s so jarring to watch. Also memorable: Her grandparents’ denial and the surprising follow-up.

Official synopsis:  Tiffany, a former athlete and cheerleader who dreamed of a career in the medical field, has no intention of giving up her IV crystal meth addiction, despite the fact that her four-year-old son is being cared for by her family
Original Air Date: August 2011

Episode 140: Brittany

brittany

Brittany
Age: 19
Location: Southeast Michigan
Addiction: Heroin
What’s memorable: The strange “unsubstantiated claims” of sexual abuse disclaimer that I’ve never seen on this show before. Has this weird effect of making you think she’s lying, when really it’s just about legalities. Also memorable: the seemingly decent co-dependent boyfriend that inexplicably puts up with a whole lotta crazy shit.

Official synopsis:  Brittany once dreamed of becoming a police officer to protect people from the traumas that she faced as a child. But at 22, her goal is slipping away. She’s a heroin addict who sells her body to get her next high. Can Brittany’s family convince her that it’s not too late to get help?

Episode 149: Brittney

britney

Brittney

What’s memorable: How desperate she was to be liked when she was a kid, how much her life changed when she got skinny, how she refuses to believe that she has a problem and that she’s just ‘catching up.’

Official synopsis:  Brittney saw her food addiction transformed into a raging alcohol addiction after gastric bypass surgery. Now she stands to lose her family as they grow weary of her alcohol-fueled antics
Original Air Date: August 2011
Interventionist: Donna

Episode 150: Jeff

jeff

Jeff
Age: 30’s
Location: Arkansas
Addiction: Alcohol (beer)
What’s memorable: How lost he is without his wife, how much he needs his beer. Every 15 minutes, all day long. This is a very sad story.

Update: Jeffrey Karl James passed away on November 17th, 2016. Here is his obituary.

Official synopsis:  A college graduate who now works as a genealogist, Jeff can’t give up his 30-cans-of-beer-per-day habit even though his health is failing, he recently lost his wife, and his children are struggling to cope with the loss of their mother. Now Jeff faces a choice–his life or his beer. Can an intervention bring him to his senses?
Original Air Date: September 2011

Episode 151: Jeanna

jeanna

Jeanna
Age: 24
Location: Madras, Oregon
Addiction: Meth
What’s memorable: The brutal event that triggered the addiction and the way she’s responded to the trauma. Just awful all the way around. By far one of the most tragic episodes of this show.

Official synopsis:  Jeanna conquered generations of addiction until the murder of her four-year-old son sent her spiraling into a $100-a-day meth addiction. An intervention is the only way to help Jeanna start to heal her troubled soul.
Original Air Date: September 2011

Episode 141 – Eddie

eddie

Eddie
Age: 30’s
Location: Pennsylvania
Addicted to: Alcohol, gambling
What’s Memorable: That seriously tearjerking intervention.

Official synopsis:  Eddie, an All-American baseball player in college with offers to play in the majors, was pursuing two master’s degrees but school pressure and his father’s overbearing expectations pushed Eddie to drink and gamble heavily. His addictions have left him divorced, homeless, and in legal trouble due to five DUI charges. Can an intervention save this once perfect son and hometown hero from self-destruction?
