Buy Me a Coffee

Season 10, Episode 6

Penny Lee

Age: 48
Location: Waipahu, Hawaii
Addiction: Alcohol (beer)
What’s memorable: The crazytown drunken rants, how she quit her long-term job because she wanted to drink, how guilty her son feels about going to live with their dad, how she’s forced to babysit her grandson and has to beg to get paid for it because her daughter knows she’d buy beer with it. “If they feel they can’t trust me with money, then why trust me with my grandson?” Penny Lee does make sense sometimes. The intervention is a powerful one.

“We’re gonna do our very best to heal your whole family. You don’t ever have to live this way again” – Candy

“Thank you.” – Penny Lee

Legacy Update:

Official Synopsis: Living in a small Hawaiian village, Penny-Lee has an infectious laugh and loves to have fun. But despite having a good family life and four children to be proud of, she’s an out-of-control alcoholic who spends most of her time alone, screaming and crying out to no one as she downs beer after beer. An intervention is her family’s last hope for their beloved family matriarch.

Original Air Date: July 2011
Interventionist: Candy

I agree with penny lee. She was abandoned as was I by my oldest children. Although it’s easy to play the blame game …u have to understand that what ppl do affects you too. Especially family. Some can overcome and others like penny lee who tried are completely heartbroken. My heart goes out to her…hang in there penny lee…I don’t know you but I love you and respect you

I cried my eyes out at this episode! Penny Lee is a beautiful person, the follow up that they recently aired made me so happy for her. Stay strong, Penny Lee! Your story gives me hope that my own mother will someday put down the bottle and have a life again.

I hate to say this but I think Kristi was the bigger problem than Penny-Lee. Like, if you know your mother is an alcoholic and you want someone to babysit, hire a babysitter or enroll your son in daycare. I’m sorry to say but I disliked Kristi a lot more than Penny-Lee herself. Yes, I know Penny-Lee is dangerous when she’s drinking. Yes, Penny-Lee is full of issues. But, I think Kristi is even dumber for leaving her son with Penny-Lee, yet Kristi doesn’t pay Penny-Lee a salary or even just a token of appreciation. I’m glad about the intervention though. Hopefully Penny-Lee, but moreso Kristi, smartened up. That’s my take.

    1. Anna

Yeah i kind of agree with you

    2. Alice Schmid

Yes, especially when she said, “You kow why we do’t give you money for baby-sitting? Cuz we can’t trust you with that kinda money.” Jeeeze, Kristi, rationalize much?

Get another daycare. What is the matter with you?

      1. Jenny

I totally agree. She wants free babysitting and is using her Mons alcoholism as an excuse not to have to pay her. I agree with Penny

That is not Penny Lee. This is:

Thanks for posting the Follow-up story on Penny-Lee. It’s so nice to see success stories!🤗

The synopsis says Penny Lee is “living in a small Hawaiian village” but really, Waipahu is a suburb of Honolulu. It’s quite densely populated and has a lot of shopping centers. Her home was part of a condo or apartment complex, not a village of grass huts. I wish whoever wrote that synopsis did some research.

    1. Danica

Thank you for saying this. I just read this synopsis because the episode is on. You’re absolutely right about it being a suburb.

    2. Chance and Destiny

Exactly! It’s on Ohau. Apparently the one’s who wrote the “official synopsis” have never heard of Pearl Harbor! There’s even a University there with lots of resources and counseling. Peggy Lee overcame a lot and worked very hard according to her update and doesn’t deserve to be downgraded like that. It just goes to show you that you can live anywhere in the world, including paradise and you can be affected by drugs and alcohol.

      1. Jenny

Right. They producers were there, they saw it.

  7. Katie

    Any updates on Penny-Lee?
